What is Dental Crown?

Dental crown is a fixed dental prosthesis used to replace the crown of a natural tooth damaged in its structure, positively affecting dental aesthetics.

When a tooth is fractured, has a large old filling or is seriously damaged, the dentist might recommend inserting a dental crown.

The dental crown reinforces and protects the remaining tooth structure, improving the dental arch appearance. It shows direct affects on the dental aesthetic and harmony of the patient´s smile.

Types of Dental Crown

1. Porcelain dental crown (without metal): has better dental esthetics than any other type of dental crown. It is not as resistant as a porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crown. This dental prosthesis is ideal for front teeth.

2. All-metal dental crown: less dental structure needs to be removed. The main disadvantage of this prosthesis is the metal color, and the biggest advantage is its high resistance.

3. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crown: is stronger than porcelain dental crown without metal and have excellent dental aesthetics. They are ideal for back teeth and can also be used for front teeth.

How a Dental Crown works?

The dental crown is a fixed prosthesis used to cover completely or just a part of damaged teeth, improving the patient´s dental aesthetic.

Besides providing higher resistance to a damaged tooth, dental crown can be used to improve the teeth format or alignment in dental arch, beyond improving appearance and dental aesthetics.

A dental crown can be placed on an implant, giving format and structure similar to natural tooth, so it can perform its original function in dental arch

The dental crown is attached to the teeth, as opposed to mobile dental prosthesis such as dentures and removable prosthesis, that can be removed and washed frequently.

The dental crown - a dental prosthesis that is cemented onto existing teeth or implants - can only be removed by a professional dentist.

The Dental Crown is recommended to:

- Replace a large filling when there is not enough remaining teeth

- Protect a tooth that was weakened by fractures

- Connect dental prosthesis

- Cover a dental implant

- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth

- Cover a tooth that has had a root canal treatment

Advantages of Dental Crown

The advantage of dental crown is that it strengths and protects the teeth, keeping its original format and assisting in dental aesthetics.

The dental crown should be placed before the tooth has many cavities or fractures, preventing these problems in dental arch.

Another advantage is that using dental crown you can reuse the natural teeth, that is part of the original dental arch.
