What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontics is intended to correct the teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly.

Poorly positioned or crooked teeth are not only an aesthetic problem, that can affect the patient appearance and self-esteem. It can also cause many other problems related to patient´s health that can be treated by orthodontics.

When teeth or jaws do not fit properly, It can gets hard to clean, causing decay or severe periodontal diseases. Another consequence is the stress of the mastication muscles, that can lead to headaches, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), neck, shoulder and back pain.

Through orthodontics, the patient can achieve a more harmonious, esthetic and functional smile, with a renewed oral health. Consulting the orthodontist, the need for a treatment will be evaluated, through the use of dental braces.

The braces can be mobile or fixed, and are used in order to move the teeth, retrain muscles and affect on mandibular growth. The dental braces work through a gentle pressure on teeth and jaws.

Variety of fixed dental braces

- Fixed braces: this is the most common type of device; It consists on bands, wires and/or brackets. Nowadays, they are smaller, lighter and have far less metal than in the past. The fixes braces can have attractive colors for the children, and for the adults, there is the option of clear braces.

- Special fixed braces: used to control the habit of "thumb sucking" or "tongue tie".

- Fixed space maintainers: if a baby tooth is lost prematurely, a space protector is used to maintain the space open until the permanent tooth erupts.

Variety of mobile dental braces

- Aligners: used to move teeth in the same way as the fixed braces, but without metal , wires or brackets. Aligners are removable and virtually invisible.

- Removable space maintainers: have the same function as the fixed space maintainers. They are made with an acrylic base that fits over the jaw, and have plastic branches or wire between specific teeth that must be kept separate.

- Jaw repositioning appliance: can be used on top or lower jaw, and help to"train" the jaw to close in a more favorable position. They are used in TMJ disorders.

- Shock absorbers of lips and cheeks: applied to keep the lips and cheeks away from the teeth.

- Palatal expander: used to widen the upper jaw. It consists of a plastic plaque that fits over the roof of the mouth.

- Mobile Containers: worn on the roof of the mouth, these devices prevent the teeth from returning to its previous position.

- Headgear: a band is placed around the back of the head, and attached to elastic or face bow in the front of the head.
